What a security guard on site does for your business

A security guard is the one layer of security that can think, talk and make a decision on the spot. On a business site, that usually means:

  • Access control at the gate or reception: checking vehicles, visitors, contractors and deliveries, and keeping a register of who came and went.
  • Patrols of the yard, the perimeter and the buildings, so problems are found early, not on Monday morning.
  • Watching stock and loading, where losses often happen in plain sight.
  • Being first on the scene when something goes wrong, and reporting it properly.
  • Being seen. A uniformed guard at the gate changes how people behave before they try anything.

For you, that means fewer surprises: stock that's where it should be, visitors who were expected, and a written record when something does go wrong. Before guards start, we agree the post instructions with you: what the guard checks, who is allowed in, and who to call when something happens.

Security guards for warehouses, office parks, shops and dealerships

Warehouses and workshops

Trucks in and out all day, stock on the floor and a yard that empties at night. Guarding here is mostly about controlling the gate during the day and keeping the perimeter covered after hours.

Office parks

Many tenants, visitors and couriers through the same entrance. A guard at the boom keeps a record of who came in and makes sure visitors are expected.

Retail

A visible guard at the entrance discourages shoplifting and gives staff someone to call on when a situation gets tense, such as a customer who refuses to leave or a dispute at the till.

Car dealerships

High-value stock parked in the open, test drives and a lot of foot traffic. Guards control vehicles leaving the premises and cover the lot after closing.

Check that your security company is PSIRA registered

Section 20(1) of the Private Security Industry Regulation Act says nobody may provide a security service for payment unless they're registered as a security service provider. That applies to the company and to the people it puts on your site. You can check both on the PSIRA website, which has a business verification and an individual verification service.

DBS Security is registered with PSIRA under number 468853, as De Bruyn Security (Pty) Ltd.

It's also worth knowing that wages and working conditions for security officers are set by the private security sector's bargaining council agreement, which the Minister of Employment and Labour has extended to employers outside the council. If one quote is far below the rest, ask how the guards are being paid.

What affects the quote for security guards

We don't publish prices, because every site is different. It helps to think in posts, not people: a post is a position that has to be covered for set hours, and one post can need several guards to fill it. These are the things that change the quote:

  • Number of posts: one guard at the gate, or several across a site.
  • Hours: day only, night only or 24 hours. A 24-hour post needs more than one guard a day, plus cover for days off.
  • Weekends and public holidays.
  • Duties: access control at a gate, patrols across a large site, or both.
  • Size and layout of the site.
  • Other layers: cameras and monitoring can reduce how many guards a site needs.

Guards and the other layers

Guards work best with the rest of your security behind them. CCTV cameras let a guard at the gate see the back of the yard. 24-hour off-site monitoring covers the times and places a guard can't, and some businesses use guards during working hours and monitoring at night. Criminal background checks help with the people you hire directly.

DBS Security is a family business with 25 years in the trade, and some of our staff have been with us that long. If something isn't right with a guard or a post, you phone Pieter or Marco directly. Get a free quote for security guards, or see the areas we cover.

FAQ Questions we get

Commercial security guards: questions people ask

Something else on your mind? WhatsApp Marco or call the office on 011 768 0400.

How much does it cost to hire a security guard?

It depends on the number of posts, the hours, weekends and public holidays, the duties and the size of the site. A 24-hour post needs more than one guard a day plus relief cover. Security officer wages are set by the sector's bargaining council agreement. DBS Security visits the site and gives you a free, written quote.

Are your security guards PSIRA registered?

DBS Security is registered with PSIRA under number 468853. The Private Security Industry Regulation Act requires every person who provides a security service for payment to be registered too. You can check any security business or individual officer on the PSIRA website.

Can I hire a guard for nights or weekends only?

The quote depends on the posts and the shift pattern, so tell us exactly which hours and days you need covered. Many businesses only need guards when the premises are empty, or during busy trading hours. We quote what your site needs, not a standard package.

Do I need security guards if I already have CCTV?

They do different jobs. CCTV records and, if monitored, alerts someone off-site. A guard can stop a vehicle at the gate, speak to a visitor and decide on the spot. Many businesses use both, or use guards during the day and off-site monitoring at night.

How quickly can guards start on site?

It depends on the number of posts, the hours and the duties. Pieter or Marco will give you a realistic start date with the quote, so you can plan around it rather than rely on a promise.
