Sandton ran its own municipality from 1969 until it became part of the City of Johannesburg in 2000. In the 1990s, offices began moving there from the Johannesburg CBD, and the JSE followed in the late 1990s. Today it is widely called the financial district of South Africa, with the flagship Gautrain station on the corner of West Street and Rivonia Road.

Before all that, the area was smallholdings with a rural, equestrian lifestyle. 1. A gate motor in good condition. A gate motor matched to the gate's weight, on a track that runs true, opens and closes promptly. Older motors and dragging gates are slow, and often need nothing more than servicing or repair.
2. Battery backup that works. When the power goes off, the gate should still open. Batteries wear out, so we check them on every gate job.
3. A camera that sees the street. A camera covering the approach to the gate, not only the gate itself, shows what's happening on the verge as you arrive.
4. A garage you can drive into. A garage door motor means you stay in the car until the door has closed behind you.
